Sugar Cane Harvest
My experience on an Isan farm during the sugarcane harvest was a great one. The rice harvest had finished in Nov. Now Dec, it was time to cut the sugarcane. These people worked very hard yet were somehow able to keep a smile on their faces. Yes, but this is Thaland, the land of smiles.
Sugar cane stalks are made into bundles of 10. The top (green) section of the sugar cane is cut off and used for tying the bundles. The workers receive 1 baht (about 3.5 cents US) for each completed bundle. This is such hard work for little money but this is the proud life of the rural farmer.
Completed stalks ready to be picked up and then
loaded in a truck. Next to the factory for processing
.
