Loy (meaning float) and Krathung (meaning small raft, basket) Loy Krathong may be the second largest religious holiday, behind the Songkran festival. It occurs every year in November during the proper full moon. On the evening of Loy Krathong everyone will head to the local lake or waterway and float specially made artful baskets on the water. Below you can see one that looks more like a little raft. All photos by Nopakhun Meesuk
Typically the floating basket is constructed of a bamboo base which gives it buoyancy. Banana leaves, flowers, candles, and incense are added. I like to watch the creations of these little pieces of art! Sometimes coins are placed on top as well. Darn those kids that swim in the water to try to get the money just after they have been released !
I remember my first Loy Krathong. My friends said, "Jim come!" "We are going to the river!" They handed me the krathong and I just went along with it and kind of felt stupid. I hadn't read the guide book well enough yet. Smile.
Now I can say I have been able to join in on the festivities. It is a nice occasion as the mood is right. Families and children gather along the banks. They light the incense sticks and candles as they release the krathongs along with their personal prayers and wishes.
