Rice Harvest
Every year there is a rice harvest in Thailand. These pictures were taken way out in the country near Na Khu, south of Sakon Nakhon. My friend Noi took me to meet her family on their farm and introduced me to a wonderfull village and family way of life. Like us at Thanksgiving this is a time for Thais to give thanks for this is their survival and staple. They all work so hard as a co-operative; family helping family in all the fields until all the rice is harvested.
1-Bend over 2-Grab a group of rice stalks 3-Slice with the sickle
4-Lay stalks in groups on the ground 5-Carry to thhrashing area.
Above: The rice stalks are put into a grabber that looks like a set of numbchucks. It is then thrashed by hitting a board.
Above: This is all done on a large tarp. Rice is then collected in bags. The father shaves bamboo into small strips to make rice bag ties. Yes, the mother did put me to shame as I realize how out of shape I am. Next day I am red as an apple and I realize the importance of those large hats we always see in the movies and realize the imporance of face covering for keeping the sun out. Also, no short sleeved shirts if you want to avoid a rash from the rice. OK Pattaya guys, try this one!
