Tamboon Deuan Sip

Nakhon Si Thammarat

Submission:

The Thai people ahave a strong sense of identity rich in tradition and culture. Kee from Thailand wanted to share this important occasion in her home town of Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Also known as Muang Phra, the "city of monks", Nakhon Si Thammarat is a religious center of the south. The most important festival is the Tamboon Deuan Sip, held in the tenth lunar month (either September or October) The locals pay homage to dead relatives and friends during this time. it is believed that during this fifteen-day period that their ancestors are allowed out to visit the world. Merit-making ceremonies in the temples present offerings that are believed to ease their suffering.

People make merit to the monks with food offerings. The Monks always eat first.
Money donations to the temple in baht are placed in separate pots that represent different groups.
The whole community gets involved.
Thai communities evolve around the Buddhist religion and the temples all over Thailand.
Here people come to pay their respects to the Buddha.
