I was up in the country in Chanthaburi visiting a friend. While in the city I had heard about the gem dealers there. This did not seem to interest me too much. I was asking myself what else would there be to see in the area and I found out about this cathedral in my guide book. Not being religious but having an upbringing in the Catholic church I had to see this cathedral. Anything with history or architectural beauty interests me.
I don't know when this cathedral began the name of Mary Immaculate Conception but it amazes me that such a structure does exist in a land dominated with Buddhism. It goes to show the tolerance of the Thai people and government toward religious freedom. The French style cathedral started as a small missionary chapel in 1707 but has gone through four reconstructions; the last being by the French in 1906. It is located on Chanthanimit Rd. in Chanthaburi. The saying is the original roof was dismantled during WWII to make the church less of a target. This church is well worth seeing if you are ever in the area. You Catholics out there will appreciate it very much!
Last but not least I saw this small chapel on the side of the road in Chanthaburi province. I had to stop and take a photo.
